Comparison between 2 Progesterone-based synchronisation programs (7-Day CoSynch+PRID vs PRID+eCG) for fixed time artificial insemination in suckled beef cows in European field conditions

Included in various heifer & cow oestrus (LH peak) synchronisation protocols for timed artificial insemination to increase the proportion of preferred genetics and/ or to achieve a more compact calving season for targeted management, e.g.:

• In cycling heifers & cows: Two (2) injections 11 hours apart with AI at observed standing oestrus
• Oestrogen-free protocols like Ovsynch protocol (with or without P4) device for fixed-time AI
• Oestrogen-based P4 protocols for fixed-time AI: Enzapros is given at the onset (Zebu) and, at 24hrs prior to, or at P4 device removal.

Prostaglandins, like Enzapros^®, cause luteolysis in luteal cysts.

Forms part of the treatment of endometritis (from 40 DIM), chronic metritis and pyometra in cows where a CL is present.

For the induction of abortion in cows before Day 100 of pregnancy: Abortion within 35 days in 90% of cases.

To induce parturition in cows after 270 days in gestation.

For use in parturition induction in sows – administered no earlier than 3 days prior to predicted farrowing date.

The larger surface area of the device allows for fast and sustainable Progesterone (P4) release to achieve higher plasma P4 concentrations during the period of insertion.  This is especially important in high producing dairy cows.  Less irritation and lower risk of device loss; Can be used in various protocols because it is not sold with any particular injectable hormone – allowing for flexibility as the situation demands;  Ceva recommends the use of Oestradiol Cypionate (ECP) at implant removal instead of Oestradiol Benzoate (EB) 24 hours after implant removal – eliminating the extra handling required for this.

In beef herds its use for fixed time AI leads to more calves from chosen male genetics born earlier during the calving season – yielding heavier calves at weaning or allowing earlier weaning of the dam for longer recovery until re-conception.  This ultimately contributes to an increase in kilograms beef produced per hectare grazing. 

In dairy herds selective synchronisation after the Voluntary Waiting Period results in a 100% submission rate, contributing to a higher pregnancy rate, fewer costly days open and a higher Income over Feeding Costs.

The oocyte is only available for fertilization about 6-10 hours after ovulation.  As many as about 25% of animals exhibit delayed ovulation in fixed time AI (FTAI) programs – especially during hot weather – leading to non-conception. Cystorelin is used 6 hours prior to- or, at the time of AI, to aid in overcoming this problem, resulting in a pre-ovulatory LH peak 2 hours after injection, followed by ovulation about 26 hours later.
